Biography

JoeHeadshot2.jpg

I’m Joseph from Cali but my brother and I were born in Lima, Peru, and were adopted by our American family. We were both babies when we were adopted and my bro and I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area ever since. I’m a mellow, cool, nice down-to-earth type dude. I am a graffiti artist and I love drawing, listening to rap and Latin rap music and going along with the flow. I have a learning disability but that doesn’t stop me from anything.

The first time I ever started drawing was at the age of six in 1996, and back then I loved art. When my parents introduced me to watching movies with them that’s when my art took off. I drew movie scenes from action, horror, and sometimes adventure, and whatever popped into my head at that time. I made stick figures of people jumping off the sinking ship from ‘Titanic’ or drawing sea monsters, dinosaurs or dragons. I drew my pictures on the back of my mom’s edited pages from her books.

I’d drawn a lot but eventually had to change the tone of my work. I would travel by public transportation to places like San Francisco and go to the water to find a place to set up and begin listening to my music (hip hop/rap, rock, punk.) I would pull out my bag that has my pens and sketch pad and draw whatever comes to my mind. Then my art changed when I created a drawing on 10/23/20, deciding to put my graffiti words mixed in with doodle art as my background. The feedback I got from people was overwhelmingly positive. One of my friends said my art and colors come to life.

Statement

Through the use of markers, paper and astute observation, Joe creates a very personal translation of pop culture with his explosive drawing style and direct honesty. Inspired by graffiti, music, comics and popular imagery the resulting pop art symbolizes the profuse energy we are influenced by every day. Its the combination of graf messaging and character doodles that record our complex relationship with the culture we live in.

Review

Joe’s unique vision of pop culture takes on a direct and unashamed persona, free to tell the true story of our media-inspired desires. The depth of his work goes far beyond the every day reference, reaching a level of optimism despite the excess and eventual ruin. Joe’s work is incredibly honest and therefore refreshing in his sensitivity to the constant imagery of the outside world. In his work there is a profound reflection of the difference between real and projection.
